The ASSISTANT CHIEF NURSING OFFICER:
Plans, provides, evaluates direct and indirect care to the patients of the hospital on his/her assigned shift.Â Assists in development and directs patient program and schedule to ensure that all elements are satisfied.Â Supervises patient teaching, insures that the individual treatment plans are followed and that documentation is complete.Â Assists the Chief Nursing Officer and Clinical Managers in the policy "planning, implementation and evaluation of staff.Â Contributes to the support of philosophy and objectives, educational efforts and Quality Management efforts.
Key Responsibilities include:
Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of the programâ€™s philosophy, objectives, standards, policies, and procedures.
Maintains 24 hour per day, 7 days per week responsibility for the overall functioning of the unit(s) supervised.Â Takes call on a rotating basis as the clinical supervisor on call for weekends and holidays.
Assists in determining staffing needs and core staff requirements and demonstrates an understanding of FTE calculations as they correspond to patient acuity and census.Â Evaluates needs of staffing above core, such as necessity of 1:1 use.Â Coordinates with other Clinical Managers on a daily basis to insure that all shifts are covered in the most cost effective manner.
Â Supervises all staff assigned to program in keeping with standards, policies, and procedures.Â Conduct regular reviews of all staff during probationary periods and at one year intervals of employment.Â Monitors employees in regard to both personnel policies and delivery of patient care.Â Recognizes employee growth, gives regular feedback and counsels employees as necessary taking appropriate disciplinary action when warranted.
Participates in the selection process of new employees by providing Human Resources with current staff needs and qualifications for staff sought, assists in the interview process, and suggests recruitment activities
Is aware of the morale of his/her personnel and at all times promotes better patient care through the motivation of his/her staff.Â Demonstrates positive, non-splitting attitude, respects differences of opinion.Â Is able to lead and mobilize a team for positive change, problem resolution and creating a product that can be perceived as best clinical practice.
Monitors the physical environment, taking measures to correct safety hazards, assuring a clean and home-like atmosphere and insuring the completion of special and routine maintenance.
Assures that each new employee receives a thorough orientation to the program by insuring completion of orientation checklists, assigning experienced staff to teaching activities and direct observation of the clinical competence of new staff.
Supervises the recording of appropriate progress notes and other data into the patientâ€™s medical record.Â Reviews othersâ€™ documentation to determine if documentation is thorough, descriptive, objective, and follows the approved charting format.
Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by effectively utilizing resources in a cost efficient manner.Â Monitors all requests for material for area and approves requests before submission.
Monitors the use of restraints or seclusion using policy and procedure in determining criteria for review.Â Evaluates each staff memberâ€™s ability to apply de-escalation techniques and methods of non-violent crisis intervention.
Develops education programs as needed to support the staff with tolls needed to implement patient care and for patient educationsÂ Works collaboratively with the Nursing Supervisors to assess the learning needs of staff, and provide/plan in-services geared to meet the learning needs of the staff and patientâ€™s needs.
Addresses programmatic concerns and ensures the program is followed per the schedule.
Promptly notifies the CNO of any performance of conduct problems.
Deals with administrative problems in the absence of the CNO.
Works closely with the PI/RM Director to investigate any clinical events(ie, HPR, medication errors, level 3 or 4 events, etc.)
Supervises all RN Supervisors as well as other areas defined by the CNO and/or CEO
Other duties as assigned.
