The primary purpose of this position is to provide technical support, clinical oversight and support to the ophthalmologists, optometrists, residents, and other technicians with regard to all aspects of technical duties in order to provide maximum patient care.
Assists the ophthalmologists with clinical procedures and exams as required. Monitors ophthalmologist schedules for correctness and efficient patient flow. Functions as lead technician for an attending Ophthalmologist. Patient assignment may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups.
Takes visual histories and evaluates visual acuity, ocular motility, field of vision, Autorefractio and keratometry of cornealcurvature and color visual examinations using standard automated and manual ophthalmic equipment.
Performs clinic procedures including culture processing, tonometry, ocular motility and OCT topography photography.
Sets up instruments and assists in minor surgical procedures; also assists with post-operative patient care, including medication instructions, post operative limitations and education.
Triages patient telephone calls regarding the need/urgency for appointment. Handles medication refills, questions regarding glasses/contact lens prescriptions.
Maintains ophthalmic equipment and trains other personnel to use equipment as appropriate and stocks exam rooms.
Performs lead tech responsibilities for assigned physician.
High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge through 4 years in an ophthalmology clinic setting.This position requires COT certification by Joint Commission Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO). BLS certification
Demonstrated skill in performing complete patient work-ups and use of ophthalmic equipment and instruments that include, but not be limited to: slit lamp, lensometer, auto refractor, visual field analyzer, applanation tonometers, as well as other types of tonometry equipment.In addition to the demonstrated skills listed for the COA, the Ophthalmology Technician will perform slit lamp and fundus photography, axial length measurement procedures and evaluation, spectromicroscopy, and various types of tonometry instruments; Goldman applanation, tonopen, pneumotonometry, lensometry, hand-held types of tonometry, as well as refractomery and retinoscopy skill.
Associates degree in related field.Goldmann manual visual fields certification.
Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
