The primary goal for the Charge Nurse/Board Runner is efficient operating room coordination to insure prompt, safe, effective throughput of surgical patient. This position is responsible for the daily management and coordination of operating room assignments, ensuring proper staff skill mix and equipment coordination. Works with the anesthesia department to ensure appropriate staffing is available for schedule changes throughout the day. Coordinates the care of the surgical patient with ancillary departments, such as PACU, inpatient units, Radiology, Lab, or Cath Lab. Works closely with the scheduling department to coordinate the surgery schedule for the following business day. Serves as the central contact person for surgeons, anesthesia, surgery staff and associates in the department. Able to demonstrate organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills. Responsible for efficient and effective patient care and quality improvement. Helps in determining goals and effectively manages resources to achieve the goals. Provides immediate mentoring/coaching to teammates as needed. Maintains a collegial relationship with physicians to ensure quality patient care. Participates in the development and growth of safety culture in the Surgery Department. Other unit responsibilities may include participation in performance improvement, clinical education, staff counseling and coaching, providing input for employee evaluations and quarterly charge nurse meetings. Performs all the duties required of an OR staff nurse. Reports directly to the Clinical Coordinator/OR manager and Director of Perioperative Services.
Work requires knowledge, experience and skills in which managerial, teaching and strong, collaborative communication abilities have been demonstrated in order to effectively manage care of the surgical patient, unit operations, staff assignments, and care appropriate to the age of the patients served in the surgery department, for efficient throughput. Has at least three yearsï¿½ operating room experience and proven leadership ability. Speaks, reads and writes English.

American Heart Association BLS
