| The Dialysis Unit Medical Instrument Technician (MIT) is responsible for the safe operation and continual preventative maintenance and repair of dialysis equipment. The MIT is an integral member of the Dialysis/Renal interdisciplinary team and helps with various duties that are necessary to maintain a well-functioning unit. The MIT is able to recognize and react to signs and symptoms that signal the onset of complications of dialysis, take appropriate action, and report these complications. Duties of the position include but are not limited to: Under the collaborative supervision of the dialysis nurse manager, dialysis charge nurse and dialysis RN's, provides hemodialysis treatment to patients with renal failure in the chronic and acute setting, and/or to maintain patients with chronic irreversible kidney disorders. Monitors dialysis treatment parameters, e.g., vital signs, weight loss. Collects and records vital signs using blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes, scales and thermometers. Records patients' condition and changes (blood pressure, excess fluid, etc.) and determines proper treatment procedure, technique, and machine adjustments Initiates and terminates hemodialysis treatments following basic procedures. Monitors patients throughout treatment and makes necessary adjustments according to the patient's medical condition, previous experience, and accepted practices in the chronic and acute setting under the supervision of the RN. Demonstrates proficiency in cannulating and decannulating dialysis fistula's and grafts. Operates diagnostic and therapeutic medical instruments and equipment as part of the treatment of kidney failure. Responsible for the routine maintenance, troubleshooting and disinfection of equipment, dialysis water distribution system quality monitoring, restocking of supplies and preparation of dialysate concentrates for dialysis procedures. Keeps accurate log records of routine machine maintenance and repairs. Prepares all necessary equipment and supplies for dialysis procedures. The Dialysis Medical Instrument Technician is responsible for setting up the dialysis machines in preparation for dialysis treatments before the scheduled patients arrive. Will assist in training for staff to set up machines. Transports equipment to other areas in hospital where needed for treatment for acutely ill patients. Ensures proper cleaning and/or sterilization of equipment. Performs maintenance and adjustments as needed. Monitors water treatment systems in the Dialysis Unit, as well as portable reverse osmosis (RO) units to ensure that water is within established quality standards and reports all deviations. Collects specimens from equipment for chemical and bacterial analysis according to unit protocol. Keeps records of these results. Independently performs daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annually checks in the process of monitoring equipment in the dialysis unit. Prepares quality control specimens, conducts quality control procedures on equipment and reagents, and maintains proper records for quality reports. Collects appropriate water and dialysate samples for testing of water and dialysate quality. Has a thorough knowledge of American Association of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) standards as it applies to all aspects of dialysis. Stays abreast of AAMI changes and implements actions that reflect these changes. Also has knowledge of the Joint Commission and the other regulatory standards such as OSHA as they apply to the dialysis setting. Is aware of and practices the safety policies/procedures of the medical center, and participates in quality assurance and performance activities as directed. Participates in the Dialysis Unit's PI meetings and reports on the machine maintenance and water quality testing results. Collaborates with the various services in the medical center that include plumbing, electrical, carpenters etc., and also collaborates with outside contractors such as the water treatment and dialysis staff, for questions, problems or concerns. Provides education to new dialysis staff, other hospital employees, patients, patients families, and Renal fellows regarding dialysis principles, hemodialysis machine and water treatment equipment functioning concepts. Writes, revises or updates policies and procedures related to water quality testing, hemodialysis machine functioning and water treatment equipment all are verified by Nurse Manager. Maintains inventory of dialysis disposable supplies and responsible for ordering these supplies as needed. Demonstrate knowledge of Inventory system and stays abreast of changes to inventory system. Able to run reports to show inventory and usage of dialysis supplies Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the principles, theories procedures, and practices appropriate to perform hemodialysis treatments safely and effectively. Performs or supervises routine housekeeping duties to assure the dialysis treatment area is clean and sanitary.
